So, if any of you are a journalism major like me, or even slightly interested in the world around you, you’ve been following the news about the recent tornado outbreaks. And for the rest of you, you’ve at least heard about the hyperactive tornado season this year. Yes, even those of you living under rocks cannot use your residence as an excuse to be unaware this time.

I also was recently reading a letter to the editor in the March 2011 issue of The Atlantic, and I came across an interesting viewpoint in regards to greenhouse-gas warming. The letter was from Jonathan Katz, Professor of Physics at Washington University in St. Louis, in regards to the article “Science vs. Environmentalism” in the magazine’s December 2010 issue.

While it is very apparent to most scientists and everyone who believes them that this warming exists, how do we actually know whether it is good or bad? While fresh water supply may be decreasing, and temperatures rising, how do we really know what the effects will be?

The closest comparison we have is the Ice Age, and while the period has been credited for the distinction of many species (bad), it also forced man to prioritize and innovate in order to survive (good), which I think we can all agree is the ultimate goal.

So why does the picture have to be black or white? I don’t know about you, but I like colors, and I’m not much one for doom. It seems to me that both sides of the issue have pros and cons. Cole plants to provide workers with jobs, and it is quite possible that some of those workers may not be able to find jobs outside the mine. And that is never a good thing in tough economic times. Carbon emissions to pollute the air, making it harder for species to survive and making us all feel a little asthmatic at times.

Part of that thing called innovation is already taking place with the development of renewable resource technologies. Solar, wind, tidal, and biofuel energies seem to be creeping around the corner.There are also many pros to renewable and “green” energy supplies. They too create jobs, although whether those are comparable to coal miners and oil drillers is yet to be determined. And it is true that, right now, the costs of those energies are higher, also not good during tough economic times.

Yet, the total power these energies can supply can never fully be known until we try, much like everything else in life. And while running out of coal or oil, albeit a far-off reality, may be possible, we don’t really need to worry about running out of sun or wind. After all, if we run out of sunlight, I think we may have bigger problems to worry about than keeping last night’s leftover from spoiling, just saying.

So I’m proposing that, like everything else in life, we stop trying to fool ourselves that we can calculate exactly what is going to happen, and realize that we have to try something, anything, to actually succeed. Who knows, maybe that ugly word “compromise” might be able to help. Because, hey, I think rainbows are pretty.
